This is one of the best articles I have ever read about Pakistan. A word about NWFP. Being a Pakistani I can tell that after the creation of Pakistan, NWFP has been one of the fastest in its progress in the country. Peshawar is a major agricultural research center and home to many multimillionaires of Pakistan. Although, I am from Punjab province of Pakistan, I have always fancied about NWFP.

I come from Peshawar so I will disagree with your characterization of the city. Its always been a peaceful, stable place, albiet dirty and heavily affected by events in neighboring afghanistan.

Otherwise your article was good and fair. Please visit Pakistan again and encourage your fellow Filipino's to as well. They will be safe and happy.

LOL. I am sure Pakistani Ambassador could not be less pleased with part about suicide bombing. No doubt, terrorism has plagued the country, but unlike Western media depicts Pakistan as being absolutely hostile and insecure, it actually has a lot to offer.
However, being a Pakistani, I cannot find an article about the country more honest and true. (Count me as a Pakistani fan of yours now :))

Shaukat Sultan... as far as my memory serves, no.
Khan is a very common surname in Pakistan. You can find people with this last name as commonly as, 1 in every 25 Pakistanis. The rate goes even higher if you are in NWFP.

Will add link to your blog on my page.

Thank you, Umer for reading and replying. The Pakistani Ambassador to Manila--who even treated us to dinner a day or two before we left for Karachi--was not amused, I think. And I'm grateful for the additional information about Karachi that you put in. By the way, any relation to Shaukat Sultan? If I'm not mistaken, his surname--although we were told he didn't use it even though it appeared in his business card--is Khan.

Excellent and "true" article. Much better than typical bullcrap shown on CNN and Fox. :)

One thing I should add, there is a reason why there are no skyscrapers in the city. Karachi's soil is soft, which is deposited by sea in last few thousand years. Thats why, it is not possible to build tall buildings with a lot of weight, unless you can dig a really deep (some 150 meter) foundation to support it.

Secondly, Karachi has not one, but two "fault lines" going through it. The area is highly prone to have earthquakes. Luckily since the earth is soft, we get smaller (low on Richter scales) earthquakes every now and then, releasing the tension inside the earth.

Anyway, the government is currently analyzing the feasibility and possibility of building a skyscraper in the city. Which will address your complain of having no tall building in the second largest metro city in the world :)
